TITLE
Small and Medium Wind Power for Urban Location on Gozo
ABSTRACT
This project investigates the viability for the application of small/medium wind turbines in urban communities, such as on Gozo, to serve as a mitigating measure for current energy issues. Problems that are currently present in Gozo and similar urban communities include rising demand for fuel, and a lack of land available for development to expand generation capacity. The research for this study draws heavily from existing wind applications in European urban communities given similarities in settlement patterns and in wind characteristics. The scope of the project would cover the broad topic of urban center applications on Gozo, and a study of the feasibility of a small wind turbine at the Arka Foundation in Ghajnsielem, Malta. Computer-generated models of the wind resource climate were created with WASP and WindFarmer simulation programs. Through this investigation, a scientifically extrapolated proposal of urban wind turbine applications as a potential mitigating energy measure will be produced.
