ISAT/Geog Study Abroad In Malta 2006
2006 Field Study Projects
TITLE
Automating and Mapping Beach Health Assessment
ABSTRACT
The Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Insular Coastal Dynamics (ICoD) has developed a rating system for sandy beaches to facilitate beach management practices on Malta and Gozo. The five types of beaches (remote, rural, village, urban, and resort) are ranked on a five-star system based on safety, facilities, water quality, litter, and hinterland scenery. The objective is to collect baseline data on for three Maltese beaches, automate the evaluation calculations using excel, and display our data and observations with MapINFO GIS program. Once the procedure is refined, a Visual Basic interface may be added and implemented in other Mediterranean countries.
